How to Design Air Agitation System for Metal Finishing

Ametek was kind enough to send EPI calculators (listed below) for determining how large of a high-volume low pressure rotron blower is required for a metal finishing line/tank.

 

First, you complete the Application Data Sheet -ADS10. It asks for the following:

  • Voltage, phase, Hertz and motor enclosure

 

Next, it asks for tank dimensions, solution depth and what type of solution require the agitation

  • What type of agitation mile, medium or rapid? For the E-Brite 30/30 rapid is best for plating at higher current densities.
  • How many sparger lines / number of legs per tank?
  • Distance from tank to blower?
  • Pipe size

 

From the solution type you can determine the agitation factor (F) SCFM/ft2 and the specific gravity. For example, let’s say you want to create a 168-gallon tank of E-Brite 30/30 for heat treat stop off. Tank dimensions are 36”x36”x36” with 30” of solution depth. From the ADS-10 you will see the F = 1.0-1.5 SCFM/ft2. The specific gravity they factor in is 1.2.

 

1.) Determine pressure required in psig

P =(0.43)(D)(SG) + 0.75      D = solution depth in feet  SG= specific gravity

Our tank P=(0.43)(2.5)(1.2) + 0.75   equals 2.04 psig

 

2) Determine the flow 

     Q ( SCFM) = (A)(F)      A =surface are of tank in square feet  F=agitation factor from ADS10

      Q= (9)(1.5) note use 1.5 because we need  rapid agitation

 

3) See AST-10 for Sparger sizing directions
