Blackening Steel in Ultra Blak 404

Posted by on

Searching for a custom blackening process for your parts? Send in up to six small parts with a Parts Submission Form like one prospective customer recently did.
Hot black oxide of difficult-to-blacken metals will produce a black color, but over time leaches out the black oxide chemistry and results in a white "salt bloom". EPi's Ultra Black 404 blackens this steel alloy without the commonly seen salt blooms!
Ultra black 404 blackens cast iron and steel. It blackens at a lower temperature of 250F versus hot black oxide 285F, which means less caustic fume. Traditionally, powder metal parts can't be blackened in Ultra-Blak 404 because it generates a white bloom from the caustic. Insta-Blak 333 is another solution for difficult to blacken metals.
