Trivalent Chromates

Trivalent Chromates Finishes for Zinc

Today’s zinc chromates processes are moving forward with zinc trivalent chromates to meet European Union initiatives End of Life Vehicles (ELV) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/End_of_Life_Vehicles_Directive) and restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electric and electronic equipment (RoHS). To learn more go to this link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restriction_of_Hazardous_Substances_Directive).

EPi has a complete line of trivalent yellow chromate and trivalent blue chromate processes for zinc plated, zinc diecast and zinc galvanized processes.

These trivalent chromates offer the following advantages:

  • Ultra high corrosion protection (see table below)

Trivalent Corrosion Table

ASTM 5% White

Red Rust

E-Chrome Ultra Yellow 600

600-700 hours

800-900 hours

E-Chrome Ultra Yellow

150 hours

250-350 hours

* above baked for hydrogen embrittlement

300 hours

350-450 hours

E-Chrome Ultra Yellow Red

150 hours

250-350 hours

E-Chrome Ultra Blue

100-150 hours

180-250 hours

All tests performed on acid chloride zinc plating process 0.3 mls on 4″ × 6″ Q-panels using ASTM B-117.

  • Baking for hydrogen embrittlement results in no loss of corrosion like hexavalent chromates
  • Service as an excellent base for paints and rubber banding
  • EPi trivalents do not fade easily in the sun (UV resistance)
  • Does not wipe off with your thumb
  • Scratch resistance/white creeping corrosion

Do you still need to use hexavalent chromates? EPi has a complete line. Click here to learn more. Want to find out more about EPi’s chromates? Visit our Trivalent Chromate FAQ page.
